New France (1524-1763)

Note: Nationalism in Québec did not magically appear from the early days of French settlement in America. It took many generations for the Canadien and the Acadien identities to emerge as distinct nationalities. Early Québec literature attests the birth of a distinct Canadien cultural identity at the end of the 18th century. At the beginning of the 19th century, under British rule, it is clear that the inhabitants of Lower Canada (today Québec) think of themselves as a Nation.
